Baby, Pregnancy, and Breastfeeding Must-Haves

1. Clever Rabbit Clothing Crib Notes Gift Set ($40): This onesie and bib set is absolutely perfect for any expectant mom's baby shower or post-delivery gift for the baby. Made with pre-shrunk organic cotton in the USA in sweatshop free environments, the onesie offers 10 step-by-step instructions on how to change a baby's diaper from laying a fresh diaper on the changing table to never leaving a baby unattended on the changing table. It's perfect for jittery first-time parents who may not quite have the hang of changing diapers down pat or for dads who think diaper duty is a little too much to handle. The bib, also made in the USA with pre-shrunk organic cotton, has five steps of instructions on how to properly burp a baby. Not only is this witty onesie and bib set adorable, it's also very resourceful.Functionally, the Beco Butterfly is incredibly sturdy, the shoulder straps are comfortable and can easily accommodate a young child or toddler. And, if that's not enough, Beco includes an instructional DVD in the box to help ensure you wear their carrier properly. So smart!
4. Names That Stick: ($14.95) We absolutely love creativity and Names That Sticks definitely fits the bill. Using Names That Stick is a fun way to come up with your baby's name with your partner, your children, or even at a baby shower.
There are 500 popular name magnets (250 for boys and 250 for girls) that you can combine in a fun way to help come up with the name of your baby. It's a really unique alternative to endlessly flipping through a baby names book. The only drawback is if you're leaning toward a more unique name for your baby or one with a little more meaning and character, Names That Stick won't help you. But, if you and your partnering are sticking with the most used names in America, like Amanda, Maggie, Brian and Tyler, it's a perfect and fun solution for naming your little one.
5. Clip'N'Feed ($35): All breastfeeding moms have a different comfort level when nursing in public. Some are more comfortable than others, and for those moms who prefer to be covered up there are great ways to do so like using the Clip'N'Feed. Instead of covering your baby or toddler's head with a heavy, hot blanket, the Clip'N'Feed can be easily clipped to your top or you can use the neck strap and drape the lightweight cotton cover over your baby. It's perfect for those days you are out and about and your baby or toddler needs to eat. You can do so knowing that you're not bothering those who are easily offending and you can nurse in the privacy you need.
The Clip'N'Feed can also be used as a stroller cover. We like that it's multi functional. The Clip'N'Feed is made of 100% cotton and comes in 16 designs.
6. Fit Mom Pregnancy and PostNatal DVDs ($19.99): It is vital that you stay as healthy as possible when you're pregnant and even after you have given birth to stay energized with a brand-new baby. Fit Mom is an excellent way to stay centered and fit at the same time with their prenatal yoga DVD and postnatal workout DVD. What we like most about these DVDs is not only are they well-produced, but the FitMom experts don't try to beat you into shape or force you out of your comfort zone. Both DVDs provide a reasonable, yet effective way to stay in shape or get in shape after giving birth.
The immediate days after giving birth and even those months before having a baby it is not always feasible to pull on your sweats and get to the yoga studio or to the gym. When those days roll around when you're feeling blah, but you still want to break a nice sweat and feel energized you can pop these in and feel great afterwards.

Babies Delivered by C-Section Before 39 Weeks More Likely to Have Serious Health Problems
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
A new study has found that babies delivered by elective Caesarean section before 39 weeks of pregnancy, to mothers who previously had an elective C-section, are much more likely to have serious health problems than newborns delivered under the same circumstances at 39 weeks. The study, conducted in part at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, also found that babies delivered at 41 and 42 weeks faced a similarly elevated risk as those delivered before 39 weeks. However, only a very small percentage of newborns in the study were delivered this late.
"What we found is there's a very tiny window between 39 and 40 weeks where baby outcomes are optimal, and any deviation before or after that 39th week results in increased risk," said John Thorp, M.D., study co-author and McAllister Distinguished Professor and division director for women's primary healthcare in the obstetrics and gynecology department at UNC.
These results are important, Thorp said, because all of the health problems associated with delivery before 39 weeks exact a heavy toll on families, both emotionally and financially. This in turn leads to increased health care costs for society at large.
"Babies born prior to 39 weeks have more feeding difficulties, more breathing difficulties and need more medical support, whether it be artificial ventilation or oxygen support or some form of tube feeding," he said.

It's time to vote for the TurboTax Cutest Last-Minute Tax Deduction contest. In the past two months, TurboTax received over 300 beautiful baby photos from across America. If you haven’t already checked out the site, go to www.CutestTaxDeduction.com to VOTE for the finalists.Don't forget that there are still a bundle of tax deductions that come with a new bundle of joy. For example, a baby born in 2008 could deliver a $1,000 child tax credit. That’s a gift that keeps on giving until they turn 17. Be sure to file a new W-4 form with your employer to claim an additional withholding "allowance which may help boost your take-home pay. Also, consider taking advantage of childcare reimbursement (flex plans) at work that let you divert up to $5,000 a year into an account to help pay for child care bills.

And now that the economy is out of whack, organic products from produce to soap cost a lot.Earth's Best, the first and only full line of organic baby food, has recognized how costly it is for parents to feed their babies organically all of the time, so they have made it a little easier to buy their full line of products.
The "Celebrate the Firsts" promotion is a receipt redemption program. You can save money on Earth Best's organic baby products including
formula, jar foods, juices, cereal, teething biscuits and pastina by sending in receipts for the Earth's Best products they purchase. Here are the rewards:

Co-Sleeping in Mothering Magazine's New Issue
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
When my daughters were babies they always slept in our bed. We were a proud, co-sleeping family. And when our daughtes became toddlers, we purchased them a bed, they enjoyed having their own space, and life went on merrily after that.I am a huge proponent of co-sleeping. When I had newborns I never missed an ounce of sleep because when my babies woke up during the night, they would nurse back to sleep, and I would drift back to sleep with them. The rhythm of our bodies -- mine and my babies -- was always in sync and we were happy and rested as little lambs when we awoke to face a new day.
Mothering magazine's January/February issue is dedicated to co-sleeping. Experts weigh in on why co-sleeping is natural and completely safe (pg 52). And parents have sent in countless pictures of co-sleeping that you really shouldn't miss (pg 42). They're all adorable.
Mothering magazine's January issue will be on newsstands on January 1. By the way, check out my blog on Mothering.com about historic breastfeeding.

Classy Kid Helps Parents Stay Green While Raising Baby
Monday, December 29, 2008

There are so many great products for babies that I sometimes get slightly jealous that my daughters are way past the baby years. Now, that certainly doesn't mean I want another baby
Classy Kid has developed wonderful disposable, green, and safe products for your baby that, really, all parents should have. Classy Kid has created environmentally degradable plastic diaper sacks, biodegradable and disposable place mats, bibs, changing table covers, and potty protectors.
After taking a look at each product and feeling them thoroughly, each product is definitely durable for the task it was created for, but clearly capable of degrading in a landfill. All of these clean and green products are wonderful for quick trips around town, and especially for vacations as they can be easily thrown away, but you don't have to feel any guilt about it. In fact, it is ideal to have the potty protectors on road trips and anywhere your children will need to use public bathrooms. And the disposable place mats can be lifesavers at restaurants when your kids are clearly ready to go, but you haven't ordered yet. You'll need something to keep them occupied The place mats are a great way of allowing your kids to color patiently. I love that along with the place mat comes triangle crayons. The triangle shape prevents them from rolling on the floor. Genius!
If you are looking for a more green way to raise your children and do your part to not contribute to waste, Classy Kid's green and clean products are perfect for you.

We've all been there: It's the middle of winter and all of your kids are sick at the same time and your youngest doesn't quite know how to blow her nose yet. That leaves her nose full of little boogies and mucus -- it's not pretty, but it's a fact. So, you resort to tissues that irritate her little nose and makes it red and sore, and miserable. That's the way it's always been, but there is an alternative that moms can use that will help soothe sore noses, moisturize, and dissolve mucus.Boogie Wipes are quickly becoming the indispensable wip
e for moms with kids of all ages. Boogie Wipes, hypoallergenic wipes created by two moms, help dissolve mucus and moisturizes with vitamin E, chamomile and aloe, and are alcohol free. In a nutshell, boogie wipes are gentle saline wipes for kids who are suffering from the common cold, allergies, and other illnesses that cause constant runny noses.Boogie Wipes come in two scents: Great Grape and Fresh Scent. Each bag is packed with 30 boogie wipes and is quite affordable at $3.99 on BoogieWipes.com. Reasons to Strive for Emotional Balance During Pregnancy
Thursday, October 23, 2008
There are plenty of reasons to be emotionally balanced during your pregnancy, one of which is the health of your unborn baby. The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research conducted a study and found that women with depression are twice as likely to have preterm birth than women with no symptoms of depression. The more depressed a pregnant woman is the greater chance for preterm delivery.
"Post-partum depression has been extensively studied and discussed by the public, but depression during pregnancy is significantly under-recognized and under-diagnosed. Clinicians should pay close attention to depression during pregnancy to catch it early," said lead author Dr. De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research in Oakland. "If prenatal depression is indeed as prevalent as reported in this and other studies and doubles the risk of preterm delivery, then bringing depression to the forefront of prenatal care could lead to a significant reduction of preterm deliveries."

We can honestly say that if you really want to give the perfect holiday gift commemorating the birth of your child you should consider giving magnetic birth announcements. Magnet Street Baby has over 100 designs to chose from and you can customize the designs with the text and colors you desire.
We like the magnetic birth announcements from Magnet Street Baby because they are sturdy, large enough to enjoy, but not too large to become a eyesore, and the text, colors, and images are crisp and clear. We highly recommend the magnetic birth announcements from Magnet Baby. They'll be the talk of the family all year long.

Need a Perfect Baby Gift? Take a Look at Shi Shu Baby
Thursday, October 2, 2008
We know quality when we see it, that is why we went head over heels for Shi Shu Style's baby blankets and snugglers. Made from cotton and bamboo and beautifully handwoven, Shi Shu Style's baby blankets are the perfect gift for any little one.Tamre Sutphen, the designer and creator of Shi Shu Style, created these supple baby blankets because one of her son's favorite blankets gave him a rash as it was made from microfiber and polyester. Parents will not have to worry about rashes with Shi Shu Style's baby blankets. Not only are they made from natural fibers, the packaging is also 100% natural, the ribbon is cotton, the dye is vegetable dye and the handtags are recycled paper with vegetable dye. Love that! The blankets and snugglers come in pink, green, blue, and yellow.

And moms, Shi Shu Style has something for you, too. Sutphen loved the baby blankets and snugglers so much she designed a throw for herself and created the Shi Shu Style throw. It is also made from all-natural fibers, cotton and bamboo, and comes in brown.

Motherhood Maternity and the March of Dimes Help Preemie Babies
Monday, September 22, 2008
For the seventh year in a row Motherhood (R) Maternity is partnering with the March of Dimes to help ensure that babies are born to term instead of prematurely. To raise awareness of premature birth, Motherhood and the March of Dimes are re-launching their campaign to educate mothers about premature birth and fund research to study why some babies are born before nine months.
Beginning October 1st, all Motherhood Maternity stores across the US will participate in numerous in-store programs to raise funds and awareness in support of Prematurity Awareness Month. Programs include the sale of the "Be Healthy, Be Happy" bracelet and charm, as well as the opportunity for customers to donate at the point-of-sale. Store associates will also direct customers to www.marchofdimes.com/petition to sign the Petition for Preemies -- a campaign to urge federal and state policy makers to move our nation forward to do more to help moms have healthy, full-term babies.
"November is when we focus the nation's attention on the impact premature birth has on babies and families, and on the opportunities for prevention," says Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. "Motherhood Maternity is a committed partner and friend in our mission to give every baby a strong and healthy start."
"Premature birth is the leading cause of death among newborns," states Rebecca Matthias, President and Chief Creative Officer of Motherhood Maternity. "We are proud of our unique opportunity to educate over 2 million expectant moms with the March of Dimes message."
Included with each Be Healthy, Be Happy charm and bracelet, Motherhood Maternity offers these nine helpful hints for a healthy pregnancy:
-- Get regular prenatal care
-- Take prenatal vitamins every day
-- Avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs
-- Avoid uncooked meats, fish containing mercury and unpasteurized dairy
products
-- Eat balanced, nutritious meals daily
-- Manage stress in your life
-- Exercise moderately
-- Maintain healthy teeth and gums
-- Know the warning signs of preterm labor

Web 2.0 Baby: The Dapper Baby
Thursday, August 28, 2008
There seems to be a shift toward sites that offer shopping and social networking all in one convenient place these days. It makes perfect sense. You might as well sell to potential customers who are having a great time socializing on your site. It's a definite win-win.One site that is doing just that is The Dapper Baby, a brand-new shopping/social networking site for moms and dads who love to meet like-minded parents and who also like to shop for stylish and trendy clothes for their babies and toddlers.
A first glance, you know The Dapper Baby is going to be something special in the marketplace of sites geared to parents with babies. The colors are smart and the layout is refreshing. But when you really get into the site it's a bit cumbersome to navigate and it is very easy to get lost. We suppose that's the greatest pitfall of trying to do too much with one site: overwhelming the user.
All-in-all, though, we can totally see The Dapper Baby being a leader in its genre in under a year with a few tweaks here and there. The logo is superb and the title is priceless.

Quick and Simple Guide to Immunizations
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Heidi Murkoff, the author of the popular must read for mothers-to-be, What To Expect When You're Expecting, has written a pamphlet called The What To Expect Guide To Immunizations: What You Need To Know About Your Child's Vaccinations. The effort is designed to help provide parents with a clear, concise understanding of what to expect with childhood vaccines and the best part, it's available online and free at www.whattoexpect.org and in pediatricians’ offices.DID YOU KNOW:
* 74% of children are delayed in receiving one or more vaccinations during the first two years of life.
* Once children experience delays of more than 6 months in their immunization schedule, the majority do not catch up, which may put them at risk for developing vaccine-preventable infectious diseases.
