What's OK and not OK for IM
Friday, September 5, 2008
Busy moms everywhere are always looking for ways to connect with their kids. With 74% of young adults using instant messaging, knowing the "IM Lingo" and the rules (or "netiquette") of online communication is key. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Yahoo! Messenger - to celebrate Yahoo! conducted a survey to find out how instant messaging has changed rules of communication and etiquette. The survey resulted in some fun statistics that will help parents teach their kids the rules of "netiquette" - they might even help mom's feel more comfortable in their kid's online world.
Rules of netiquette:
It's ok to...
- Wish someone a happy birthday via IM (according to 68% of the young adults surveyed)
- Say thanks! With an IM (57%)
- RSVP through instant message (55%)
- Apologize via IM (only 21% of young adults said it is acceptable)
- Break up electronically (8%)
- Communicate the death of a loved one with an IM (10%)
- BRB (be right back)
- LOL (laugh out loud) - believe it or not 56% of young adults admit to using LOL in their regular speech!
- TTYL (Talk to you later)
